This endearing comedy-drama, which inspired the hit CBC and Netflix television series, provides an insightful look into the lives of a Korean-Canadian family operating a convenience store. It masterfully explores the subtleties of generational and cultural tensions, balancing humor with heartfelt moments.
Playwright and star Ins Choi will return to the role of Mr. Kim (Appa). Expressing his enthusiasm for the upcoming production, Choi commented, "I’m thrilled to bring the show back to the UK. Last time, we were near a park; this time, we'll be by the river. It was heartening to see how deeply British audiences connected with the story, and I look forward to sharing it with those who missed out previously."
The play unfolds at the Korean family-owned store of the title, where the owner grapples with a changing neighbourhood and the generational gap between his first-generation immigrant experience and that of his second-generation kids. Directed by Esther Jun, who also performed in the original production, this London rendition promises to captivate audiences with its universal themes. "I have been involved with Kim’s Convenience in some shape or form for nearly 20 years, and to finally bring it to London, where I learned my craft as a director, is extra meaningful," Jun shared in a statement. "The simple genius of this play is how it continues to resonate for different cultures and ages at different times in people's lives."Completing the creative team are set and costume designer Mona Camille, lighting designer Jonathan Chan, and sound designer and composer Holly Khan. As the countdown to the premiere begins, London audiences can anticipate a cultural and theatrical experience like no other.
